Manchester City's strong finish was not enough as they were largely outclassed by Champions League holders Bayern Munich at Etihad Stadium.
Bayern took an early lead when England goalkeeper Joe Hart allowed Franck Ribery's long-range shot through him.
Thomas Muller beat the offside trap to score before Arjen Robben fired past Hart at his near post.
Substitute Alvaro Negredo pulled a late goal back for City before Jerome Boateng was dismissed for Bayern.
David Silva's introduction off the bench sparked City into life, as he made Negredo's goal and then played in Yaya Toure who was brought down by Boateng's desperate lunge.
The former City man was shown a straight red card for the professional foul.
