Zombie Pigeon

MOSCOW, RUSSIA — If being hit in the face by a dying pigeon is not on your to-do list this year, then you might want to rethink that trip to Moscow. The Russian Capitol is currently investigating a ‘pigeon apocalypse’ after a recent spate of deaths from the local pigeon population has left residents feeling nervous.

The birds, who have been exhibiting “zombie-like” behavior, are ignoring cars and passers-by according to residents and dying en masse after flying around like the brainless living-dead.
“Before death, they start to resemble zombies: they lose their orientation and fly without a sense of direction, then fall, already lacking the strength to get up,” wrote Konstantin Ranks, a science columnist at the website Slon.ru.
Although not all pigeons are affected, some have reportedly been acting as if drugged, stumbling and reacting slowly to humans, flying into the faces of passersby and then falling to the ground.

According to Leonid Pechatnikov, Moscow’s deputy mayor for social issues, some of the birds were found to have a common intestinal infection that is not dangerous to humans. But other sources say Newcastle disease, salmonella and avian flu are really to blame.
